I recently setup a tumblr and I wanted mini.ifupdown.com to point to it with tumblr’s custom domain feature. In order to do this, you have to set your sub-domains’s A Record to 72.32.231.8. Well, it’s really easy even if you don’t know what an A Record is. Yahoo explains what one is briefly,
An A (address) record is a DNS record that can be used to point your domain name and host names to a static IP address.
So with this knowledge, you now know that is basically the IP address the (sub)domain points to. So, where does one find this in 1and1′s control panel? You find it under Edit DNS of course. All you have to do is pick Other IP Address and enter in 72.32.231.8 and off you go. It’ll take a few hours (maybe 3 or who knows how many) for everything to be ready to use. You can check 1and1′s support page for A Records if you need help.
I suggest that if you make a new sub-domain for tumblr, make sure you change the default directory to something else with a page that redirects to your regular tumblr page. Just in case anything goes awry.

As you can see if you click on my webpage, I might not have figured out everything already.
What you we write for the forwarding part? Since we can’t leave it empty?
Maybe it shows erroe 403 cause my domain isn’t updated yet?
You might have to enable the custom domain option on tumblr’s options page before it works properly. I’m sorry I can’t help really.
Thanks! I’ve been wondering how to do this for hours and your blog helped a ton.
thank you for this! it really helped me a lot! =)
btw, what do you mean by creating another directory? thanks in advance!
If you have sub.domain.com, you should make a directory on your server. Then make your sub.domain.com point to that directory. This means making the directory you make the root-level directory for the sub-domain. And finally, set the ANAME record, following the instructions above.
You don’t actually have to do this, but if the ANAME doesn’t work right, you can have an index.html or whatever redirect any visitors to your proper tumblr.com/address if necessary.
Ryan, thanks very much for this – saved me a bunch of hang-wringing and fist-pounding.
Thanks. I’m grateful that you’ve stepped up and made things simple, where 1and1 seem genetically incapable of making things user-friendly. Much appreciated.
Hello Ryan,
I know this is old and everything, but do you know which destination should my sub-domain lead to? For now destination is /. but should I set my domain to redirect to my tumblr blog?
For now with these settings I get a 403 Error, but maybe I’m just a little impatient…
Thank you!
The destination in the web directories probably doesn’t matter. The DNS setting will take a while to propagate, but once it does, the error should go away.
Good luck!
THANKS RYAN!
